How the numbers are made
Every result comes from standard geometry and exact unit definitions: volume is length times width times depth, one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and one US ton is 2,000 pounds. The full formulas, with worked examples, are on the how it works page.
The calculation code is covered by automated tests, which run before every release.
Where densities come from
The material weights shown on this site are typical ranges for common materials, offered as a starting point. They are not measured values for any particular quarry. Weight changes with stone type, moisture and how a load is packed, so the calculator always lets you enter your supplier's number, and we recommend you do.
What we will not do
We do not publish pages written only to catch search traffic, and we do not copy other calculators. We do not accept payment to change a result or to recommend a supplier or product.
Corrections
If a number or a statement looks wrong, tell us and we will check it against the formulas and fix it. Material changes are noted with an updated date on the page.
Funding and advertising
The calculators are free and need no account. If advertising is shown in future, it will be clearly separate from results and will never change them. We do not use affiliate links in the calculators.
Limits
Results are planning estimates for ordering material. They are not engineering advice. Confirm quantities with your supplier before you order. See the terms and privacy policy.
